Introduction: pp. 1 - 9

Please click on "comments" below to post your thougts to the following:
  1. In LD debate, who selects our topics? How often does our topic change?
  2. The authors describe debate as a "forced choice" between two ideas that are "mutually exclusive." What do those two terms mean? Feel free to consult the book's glossary, but post definitions in your own words. For Varsity members- Why is debate a forced choice? How is debate a forced choice?
  3. On p. 8, the maroon box discusses "weighing." What is meant by this term?
  4. Let's have a mini-debate! Using the basketball analogy, post your team selection (O'Neills or Iversons) and include reasons why you are picking that team.

-The topics are chosen by the NFL, or the national forensics league
-The topics change bi-monthly
-A forced choice is one where one is forced to take a position on an issue
-mutually exclusive means that the two ideas are essentially opposites. They can't coexist. The debator must separate the affirmative from the negative.
-debate is certainly a froced choice. In a round we must take on e position ant argeu it. What side we are on and what we argueing is pre-determined. We don't have a choice. It is all chosen for us by the NFL and the "Tab Gods".
-weighing is a big debate term that means making a decision when one looks at the pros and cons of both positions and makes an informed decision, taking everything into consideration.
-My dream team would include mostly shorter and faster players
-The aggression, speed, and agility that these players bring will help them defencivly and offencivly.
-They will be better at getting the ball, which allows them to score more.
The agression will also intimidate their opponents
-The speed, agression, and heart that these players will bring will boost attendence, ratings, and excitement for the team.
-This will bring in more MONEY to the team.
-Size and shooting is just ONE part of the team> The real points are scored by the shorter, more agl and speedy players.
-Lebraun is not the biggest player in the NBA or even on the cavs. He is leading is team to battle for the National Championship!! I don't see Shaq or You Ming in the Finals. Height only gets you so far!!!

*topics are chosen by NFL and change Bi-monthly
*Forced choice is where you have no potion but to make a choice
Mutually exclusive is when the two arguments are opposites
*Weighing means taking everything from both sides into consideration
*My choice for the basketball team would have to be of short/fast players
-Speed and even being shorter will help them both on offence and defence
OFFENCE
-one points have about equal chances on both if they practice
-two points may seem to be to tall advantage but the faster players will get more chances to make those shots
-three points the faster plays will be able to get open more often to make those shots
DEFENCE
-steals are going to be easier for the shorter players for the taller players will have a bigger dribble
-rebounds can go to either one for ones speed and the others height
-blocked shots the shorter plays can steal the ball and with being faster get a good chance of not getting their shot blocked

1.) the NFL chooses topics; topics change every two months

2.) a forced choice is a choice that makes one take a certain position; sitting the fence isn't an option
mutually exclusive means that the two ideas counter each other; they are opposites
debate is a forced choice because the purpose of a debate is to decide which side is right and which is wrong; the debators have to make this clear, and the judge has to choose one winner, one or the other

3.) weighing is making an informed decision by comparing the pros and cons of a situation

4.) obviously the better choice here is the team composed of small but fast players. here's why:
offensively, height doesn't really matter except for dunking, and why take a two-point shot when you could take an open shot from the key (it would be open because you are shorter and faster than the other team)? not even the tall guys will make the shot if they've got three guys on them.
short guys have better shooting form. the tall guys have been used to never having to use their legs to shoot and take the easy but incorrect way of shooting; shorter guys on the otherhand have to use their legs to shoot and thus shoot correctly and shooting correctly logically is the most effective way of shooting.
shorter, quicker guys are harder to steal from because (other than being harder to catch)their dribble is closer to the ground, as opposed to the long, lanky, slow dribble of taller guys.
defensively, shorter guys can outmaneuver the slower, taller guys and beat them anywhere on the court.
stealing is easier for the shorter guys because their speed and agility.
plus, being a tall guy in a height-dominated sport and still getting schooled by a bunch of little gremlins is not good for morale, so the taller guys' egos and confidence would be shaken, whereas the exact opposite would occur for the short and quick team.
this is why the correct choice of team would be the short and quick team.

The NFL picks the topics bi-monthly that are discussed and argued by LD debaters.
Forced Choice refers to the condition of which the judge has to take a side and choosing to not take a side at all, is not an option.
For two views to be mutually-exclusive they cannot have the ability to coincide with one another.
Weighing is the decision making which distinguishes which argument is to be considered more rellevant between arguments that both pertain to the criterion.
I would have to go with the O'Neills. Their tallness will ultimately lead to more uninterupted shots leading to more successful FG's. When ever there is a strength battle (ball carrier with his back toward the defender)the O'Neills would surely over-power. With their great height, the shots of the shorter opponents will more often than not be blocked. Finally, the mentality of the short team will be distraught due the intimidation that comes from having opponents that tower over you and out-weigh you by a hundred or so pounds. The size of a player is much more valuable to winning the game than the speed of the player.

-The NFL, National Forensics League, chooses the topic and changes it bi-monthly
-A forced choice is when you are given a problem topic and you must choose a side, not both or neither
-Mutually exclusive is arguments that can not be said together
-Weighing means how you determine what a good argument is and when it should be said
-I would choose a team of O'Neills. Since they are taller, but slow, they will have an easy time on defense. They have longer arms so they can easily block the Iversons and can intercept their passes. They can get rebounds since they are closer to the hoop also. On offense, they will have an easier time shooting 2 point shots. Tall players are closer to the hoop so they can shoot 2 pointers or dunk without being blocked.

-topics are selected by the NFL (national forensics league) bi-monthly (every two months)

-forced choice-forced to choose on an issue where both positions are true
-mutually exclusive-two ideas of essential opposites.
-Debate has to be a forced topic becuase we have to argue what is given to us weather we believe it or not.
-Debate is a forced choice because both debators are putting out arguments that are both true and persuasive on both sides. There are many rounds where each side has won and loss equally the same amount of arguments but the judge is faced witht he decision to schoose only one weather he believes both sides are true. Also before we enter a round the debators are told which side to represent aff or neg and they are forced to debate upon it.

-weighing- to look at both sides before making an informed decision. There is no sitting on the fence allowed.

-choosing only one side is tough because of the good reason's placed before me, but this is debate and it's a forced choice. After thinking about it i choose Allen Iverson (short/fast team). I chose them because speed helps offense and defense. They have a hiehgt advatnage and disadvantage. The good thing is they can get the ball more often allowing more shots to possiblly rack up more points than the tall/slow team. Also with the height disadvatnage that might make them want to prove themselves further because everyone thinks as the best basketball players to be tall, so they know they have to work twice as hard for what they want, it won't be handed to them. So that means this team might have more aggression and heart for the game.
